The Grasslands
Grasslands are environments where the vegetation is mainly constituted by grasses, while trees are rare and irregularly distributed. Such grasses grow when temperatures are too low and summer too short to allow trees to grow and to spread, or when rainfalls are insufficient to make trees survive.
The Campo Imperatore Grasslands in particular, besides representing a huge heritage as far as their biodiversity and beauty are concerned, have offered for centuries an invaluable economic value to the shepherd communities of Gran Sasso's southern slope, managing to determine the success of those villages that based their economy on sheep farming, so that these places have become the land of transhumance.
